40' Azimut Motoryacht

  • Year: 1998
  • Asking: $189,000
  • Located in FL
  • Hull Material: Fiberglass
  • Engine/Fuel Type: Twin Diesel
Luxurious family boat with sleek good looks that will sleep six and whose fast, sea-kindly ride opens up many cruising possibilities. The lush décor and maple joinery — plus all the features such as abundant stainless steel window & door framing and related hardware normally found on yachts twice this size, are a real step up from any Sea Ray.

Built as a U.S. spec yacht and was ordered with all the major options such as twin stainless steel transom davits, hydraulic passarelle, leather sofas, granite countertops, and foredeck & bridge deck sunpad cushions. Under a warrantee claim, new Caterpillar 3126 main engines were installed in 2003 and have been problem-free ever since.

Machinery access is amazingly good, including the genset which is located all the way aft—well away from the Master stateroom. Ample inventory of cushions & canvas appear as new and her overall appearance belies her age. Current (second) owners have all service records since purchase in 2004. Highly recommended and easy to see.

Compared to the newer 39 Azimut, this 40 has a wider beam, over 50 gallons more fuel capacity, a larger cockpit, bigger engine room, and more deadrise aft (deeper vee) for an improved ride in a seaway.

Sleeps 6 owner's/guest in 2 staterooms with 2 heads, sleeper sofa sleeps 2.

Vessel Walkthrough
The master stateroom is forward with an ensuite head offset to port, and just aft of this is the guest stateroom. Across the passageway is the guest head to starboard, which also serves as the day head. The galley, still on the same level, is further aft. Up a few steps is the salon with a lower steering station to port. The cockpit is on the same level as the salon with a portside ladder to access the flybridge.

Master Stateroom
The large pedestal berth with mirrored headboard offers a walk around to ease the chore of making the bed. Hullside carpeting runs up to bookshelves port & starboard running fore & aft just underneath the opening port lights. An overhead hatch, along with overhead halogens, provides plenty of light. Light switches adjacent to the headboard control reading lights as well as the other overheads which is a nice touch. There is drawer storage, overhead cabinetry, and hanging lockers providing for a surprisingly good amount of room to stow stuff. A flat panel TV on a bracket is angled nicely for viewing and there is an AM/FM stereo unit.

Both the master and guest heads are primarily comprised of FRP castings and are “wet” in that a curtain hanging from a circular overhead track provides the shower enclosure. Mirrors and port lights and halogen lighting in the overheads provide a well-lit ambiance. Water closets are enclosed by the FRP castings in the form of a seat and which also hide ugly plumbing.

Guest Stateroom
There are twin berths with drawer storage under, hanging locker, night table, beige carpeting on both the sole as well as the hullside, overhead halogen lights, and an opening port light with privacy drapes.

Salon
The entire aft salon bulkhead is comprised of stainless steel-framed glass in three sections, two of which are sliding doors that open with little effort; this truly opens the salon to the cockpit and is unique in vessels of this size. The salon is monochromatic: beige carpeting (edge-bound), beige headliner, valences, window treatments, privacy drapes, sofas…the effect is to make the space seem larger and yet there are enough maple wood accents, railing, and cabinetry to add style as the Italians do so well. Headroom is about 6’3”. The portside L-shaped sofa opens up to form a 4-foot by 8-foot berth. The maple hi-low table top hinges to form a family-size dinner table. Another smaller settee is built-in to starboard which joins a curved entertainment center with tambour door upon which sits a Sharp 20” flat screen TV. Abutting the sleeper sofa, and up two steps, is the cozy lower helm station with built-in seating, five-spoked teak wheel, and stylish birds-eye maple instrument panel which houses a Urania Riviera compass, and a Furuno radar along with the normal complement of engine gauges, switches, and start/stop. The sightlines are good since the windshield/side window mullions are thin and the generously-sized windshield wipers will handle a hard rain. Reverse cycle A/C cools quickly on a hot South Florida day.

Galley
Down a few steps from the salon, the galley forms a pleasing curve in upper & lower cabinetry and sweeping granite countertop & backsplash. A high-end faucet fills either of two highly-polished deep stainless steel sinks. Hidden behind a maple door is the Indel refrigerator/freezer and flush-mounted at knee level is the GE microwave oven. Abundant natural lighting and recessed halogens illuminate whatever is heating up on the two-burner Princess glass top stove.

Flybridge & Foredeck
As is typical of Italian design, the helm seating is positioned low relative to the deck with the resultant feeling of driving a sports car. The full-width instrument panel tapers off at either outboard end just aft of the abbreviated spray venturi. Together with the severely raked-aft radar arch, the total effect suggests high speed—even at the dock!

There is a modern Furuno Nav-Net GPS Plotter, VHF, Bennett trim tab indicator, Urania Riviera compass, remote spotlight and horn. Just like the lower station, the clutches/throttles are the popular & reliable Mathers Micro Commander units.

Behind the helm seat with room for 2-3, and sharing the same seatback, is a companion seat bifurcated by a cooler box. Then, there are two large sunpads back aft. The stainless steel rails & stanchions are beefy and well positioned. The bimini top, instrument console & seat covers, windshield & side window covers were just replaced with new navy blue canvas in September of 2008.

Teak side decks are amply wide with high side rails. Two more sunpads grace the foredeck. A Lofrans windlass (with flybridge control) hauls up the 20kg. Bruce anchor with its 3/8” chain rode; a foredeck hatch accesses the anchor rode locker.

Cockpit
Teak-over-fiberglass. Big-boat touches here are the electro-hydraulic passarelle and stainless steel dinghy davits. There is a molded-in swim platform with hinged ladder. For après swim, there is a hot water telephone shower inside the transom. The shore power cable inlets are located on the transom corner for easy attach & detachments.

There is a molded in transom bench seat w/cushion (with storage underneath), P & S lockers for dock lines, and P & S molded-in steps leading up to the side decks. Two large cleats and a pair of rod holders are gunwale-mounted. A large centerline hatch provides access to the lazzarette in which is located the Kohler 9EF02 9KW genset (1562 hrs. 9/08) + dedicated battery, main engine Racor fuel filters, exhaust plumbing, and access door to the engine room. [There is an additional very large access hatch over the main engines which lies under the salon carpet. As the one-piece carpet is edge-bound with a precision fit, it comes up easily and is replaced easily.] Spare props are mounted forward in the engine room. A spare shaft is cleverly mounted athwart ships under the salon sole at the bulkhead. Four main batteries (~ 1 year old) are charged via engine alternators as well as by a Sentry charger. Cat engines drive through 2:1 ZF gears and 1.75” shafts.

A note on engine hours: the hour meters are original, i.e., they tell total boat time (old engines + new engines). The new engines had 75 hrs at time of purchase (402 hrs on the meters in 10/04). 745-402+75=418 hrs on the new engines (as of 10/08).
